Sabbath

Let's get a basic understanding of Colossians 2:16-17 by studying Leviticus 23.   How was Jesus' body foreshadowed?  Well, the answer is offering.  Which Sabbaths involved offering?  Well, only the 7th Day Sabbath did not.  Careful study of all Sabbaths should put the New Testament in context on the topic of Sabbath.

Passover - 14th day of the 1st month; symbol of the offering at
Jesus' rest (in death) in Exodus 12:2,5,6 & Leviticus 23:5

Unleavens - 14th-21st day of the 1st month; symbol of the offering of Jesus (the sacrifice of His body) Exodus 12:18; Leviticus 23:6-8;18-20

First Fruits - 16th day of the 1st month; for a symbol of the offering at Jesus' resurrection see Leviticus 23:10-14; compare the meat & drink offering of Lev. 23:13 to Colossians 2:16.
Numbers 18:12-16; 28:31; Nehemiah 10:29-37 & Joshua 5:10-14 depict these 3 days in a row.

*Note - For more research on this 3 day supernatural prophecy see Genesis 1:5 & Matthew 26:20. Then research Luke 13:32-33; 18:31-34; John 13:1-7,18;18:39; Luke 22:1,7,15-18; 24:27, 44-46 to see the fulfillment of this 3 day miracle!
The Resurrection Day is the First Fruits, & since it was a Sunday, then the 15th was the 7th Day Sabbath, & the 14th was Friday...& the Passover...& the Day of Preparation for the 7th Day Sabbath.

Weeks/Pentecost - 7 Sabbaths (50 days) after First Fruits; for a symbol of the offering of Jesus see Leviticus 23:15-22; Deuteronomy 16:9,10 &16...compare the meat & drink offering of Lev. 23:18 to Colossians 2:16

Trumpets - 1st day of the 7th month; for a symbol of the offering of Jesus see Leviticus 23:24-25

Atonement - 10th day of the 7th month; for a symbol of the offering of Jesus see Leviticus 23:27-32

Shelters/Tabernacles - 15 day of the 7th month; for a symbol of the offering of Jesus see Leviticus 23:34-42; compare the meat & drink offering of Lev. 23:37 to Colossians 2:16

Do all offerings symbolize Jesus? Well, yes, but not all Sabbaths involved offering.

*
Note - See Leviticus 23:4, "...in their seasons", meaning these sabbath days were once a year. Now, were they a symbol of the offering of Jesus? Yes, but was the 7th Day Sabbath? NO! The 7th Day Sabbath was about 52 times a year, & was never a symbol of the offering of Jesus.

The 7th Day Sabbath - see Exodus 20:8-11 & Leviticus 23:3....do you see the word offering even mentioned at all? So, Colossians 2:16 applies to those symbolic, sacrificial, seasonal, once a year sabbath days...not the 7th Day Sabbath.

God's rest was known before the 10 Commandments in Exodus 16:4-6, 22-30
God's rest was known before Exodus from Egypt in Exodus 5:5
God's rest was known before sin entered the world in Genesis 2:1-3
God's rest has future significance in Revelation 14:11-13
God's rest proves those who obey & see the Promised Land in Hebrews 4:1-11
God's rest was known even when He was laid to rest in John 19:30-31
God's rest is expected even in Heaven in Isaiah 66:23

Mathew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come unto Me, all you that labor & are heavy laden, & I will give you rest.”

Rest in God, rest in God's day of rest...& rest in God's Heavenly prepared place of rest.

  1. Notice Exodus 12:6 connects "the congregation of Israel" to Matthew 27:25, where Israel requests that Jesus' (the Lamb) "blood be on us & our children".

  2. See Matthew 27:62; Mark 15:42. The SAME day that the Passover was prepared was also the Preparation Day for the 7th Day Sabbath.

  3. Did Jesus understand that the Sabbath in the Law of Moses symbolized the offering of Himself? 2 Chronicles 35:6,12,13; Matthew 26:17-29; Mark 8:27-31; 14:12, 16-17 prove that Jesus knew. Anybody else?

Matthew 26:7-12 & Luke 7 describe Mary Magdalene preparing Jesus for burial, & notice, Luke 23:56 says that these women never used those burial spices & ointments (get it)? The Pharisees knew too, & Matthew 27:62-66 they committed to sealing the tomb with a stone & a watch-guard. So did Jesus know...you better believe it! Here's some of what Jesus knew about the various Sabbath days.
